Scaly skin - that helps

Schuppige Haut: gerötete trockene Gesichtshaut
What is peeling? Scaly skin bothers us, especially in the face, but we also don't want to see the dry skin shreds on the body. We can do that against scaly skin.

Scaly skin - this helps when dry skin forms flakes.
If the skin suddenly forms dry zones, flakes are usually the next step. But why does our dermis short come up with such ideas? The skin renews itself on average in a process that takes 28 days (depending on age). As new cells are formed in the lowest layer of the epidermis, the cells that lie above are pushed up. They dry out slowly, become horny, and penetrate to the surface of the skin like scales. Standard: The older you are, the slower the process of skin renewal takes place, and the drier the skin as a whole becomes.

How does flaky skin develop?
If the process between the death of old skin cells and the formation of new cells does not function properly, scaly skin develops. The causes can be numerous.

Too little moisture: If you have dehydrated skin, you should rely on ingredients such as hyaluronic acid - we have tested face creams with hyaluronic acid - or urea. These help the skin to store water.
Too little oil due to too much or wrong cleansing. Refatting products and gentle washing lotions are better than formulations containing alcohol.
Too frequent washing - taking a shower or bath removes valuable lipids from the skin layers.
Incorrect care products can irritate and dry out the skin. Replace perfumed skincare creams with neutral creams containing fewer active ingredients.
Cold or heat can damage the skin.
Neurodermatitis or psoriasis can be the cause. Here we will inform you about the symptoms of neurodermatitis.
Allergic reactions, genetic factors, or fungal infections can also lead to scaly skin.

Scaly skin on the face - the cleansing
Mechanically functioning peelings with coarse particles are too hard for the facial skin. They irritate the skin and - if the uppermost skin layer is already intact due to flaking - in the worst case, even cause injuries. It is better to resort to a gentler peeling, for example, an enzyme peeling. The enzymes break down protein components and thus loosen the flakes.
A face brush can also be used to gently cleanse the skin, and there are various brush attachments for impure or dry skin, for example. Cleansing creams or oils can be massaged into the skin and care for the flaky areas while cleansing.

What to do with flaky skin?
If the flakes are caused by incorrect skincare or weather conditions, we can quickly get them under control with the right measures. Moisture is then the first measure to smooth the skin structure.

Active ingredients such as hyaluronic acid (here we tested face cream with hyaluronic), urea, evening primrose oil (as naturally pure as possible in organic quality - this can also help babies with flaky skin), panthenol (soothes), and aloe vera provide moisture.

But fat is also needed now!
The grape seed oil also supports the formation of the skin's protective barrier. But some creams contain almond or grapeseed oil, and as day creams do not leave shiny traces on the face. Omega fatty acids are contained in creams that are supposed to soothe and smooth the skin surface. They are also suitable as anti-aging care for mature skin.
However, really active substance-rich care should always be left to work overnight. Night creams contain the highly concentrated active ingredients and lipids and can work undisturbed.

Caution with Vaseline: This mineral oil lies like a film on the skin and clogs the pores. Thus it continues to dry out. Also, make sure that skincare products do not contain any mineral oil ("Paraffinum Liquidum") - a look at the INCI list or a check through the website or App Codecheck will help here.

The following applies to cleanse + peeling + serum + face cream + mask: A lot does not help the same amount. Especially if the skin is irritated, too many ingredients can irritate it. In critical phases, it is, therefore, better to use a skincare range with similar active ingredients or products that are specially formulated for

If redness and itching occur in addition to dandruff, a dermatologist should definitely look at it. It can also be a skin fungus, psoriasis, or neurodermatitis.

Extra care for arid skin areas
Not every day, but once or twice a week, we treat ourselves to more: a sheet mask soaked in a highly concentrated care cocktail. Simply place the cloth on your face and enjoy the boosting effect for 15-20 minutes. We have tested sheet masks: they are the best.
Even classic masks from the tube work against rough spots and soothe. We even have DIY face masks for do-it-yourself use, with purely natural active ingredients.
An ampoule treatment (for example, with highly concentrated hyaluronic acid) smoothes the skin with vitamins, hyaluronic acid, or plant-based active ingredients - choose according to your skin type.

Be careful with creams that use retinol to combat wrinkles - they are not suitable for scaly skin, as it can cause irritation and some skin types develop dandruff as a result.

Scaly skin on the body
Sometimes we also discover flakes of skin on the legs. Our leather on the lower legs dries out quickly.

For the body, the peeling particles maybe a little coarser, if you like, take an oil peeling, which provides rich care on top.
Brush massages not only stimulate the blood circulation and give our connective tissue a kick - but they also remove dead skin cells.
A popular Ayurvedic massage with a silk glove is also good for the regeneration of the skin. Even the right old loofa glove can loosen the skin scales in the shower. And those who swear by cleansing with an electric face brush can use a special attachment for the body.
Afterward, of course, the cleansed skin must be cared for - preferably with rich creams that soothe exciting skin and are quickly absorbed. Care with urea is dosed more highly for the body than for the face. Some body lotions or body butter contain active ingredients such as evening primrose oil, rose, grape, pomegranate, or even zinc, which are now suitable for the skin.
